1986 FLEER BASKETBALL MICHAEL JORDAN ROOKIE #57 BGS 9.5 GEM MINT (PWCC-A)
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Steve Aoki was looking for something to do. With music venues and recording studios closed and the star DJ stuck at home, he began scrolling through his Twitter feed. Aoki noticed his friends tweeting about card collecting. “I didn’t really think about cards as having that much financial value,” he admitted to Rolling Stone. “I thought they were just cardboard, you know? So, when my friend was like, ‘Yeah, I just bought this card for $15,000 on Twitter,’ I was like, ‘What?'” This sudden widespread interest in cards struck a chord with the DJ, who had been an avid collector in his youth before music became his life’s passion. But as soon as he saw the treasures his friends bought, like Jackie Robinson rookies and Base Set Charizards, his love for cards returned with roaring enthusiasm. He quickly joined the party. A Wilt Chamberlain rookie. A Pikachu Illustrator. Enough modern and vintage grails to make even Gary V faint. He even partnered with card makers like Topps and MetaZoo to create curated sets and collections. A few years later and Aoki had quickly amassed one of the most impressive card portfolios to date, but of all the iconic cards that have passed through this magnificent menagerie, a Michael Jordan rookie became one of the prizes of his collection.
